Tomorrow Chilean saxophonist, 24 year old Melissa Aldana (@MelissaAldana) will lead her band at the Jazz Standard in NYC. The concert features herself with the Crash Trio feat. Pablo Menares (b) & Francisco Mela (dr) as well as special guest Aaron Parks on piano. The music will mainly be original music by Melissa, but also include material by Aaron Parks, Pablo Menares and Francisco Mela. They’ll probably throw a standard or two in there as well.
Melissa Aldana, a recipient of the Berklee Presidential Scholarship and a winner of several important Chilean prizes, has rapidly become one of the most talked about talents in NYC. She has released 2 albums on Greg Osby’s Inner Circle Music label (“Free Fall” in 2010 and “Second Cycle” in 2012) and Osby has stated that Melissa is “one of my favorite saxplayers out there – period”. In fact Melissa made her debut at the Village Vanguard as a member of Greg Osby’s band. She can also count legendary saxophonist George Coleman as one of her many supporters (rumor has it that he may even be in the audience tomorrow).
And they aren’t the only ones: New York Times have also given Melissa Aldana great reviews – click here to read one from a January performance at the Jazz Gallery also in NYC. And here to read their review of her latest album “Second Cycle”.
Melissa has already led her band at other prestigious venues, such as Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola at JALC, at Small’s in NYC, at Jamboree in Barcelona as well as many other festivals and clubs around the world. This is the first time she leads her own band at Jazz Standard. There will be 2 sets at 7:30pm & 9:30pm. Please stop by to check out a musician we find to be one of the most interesting we’ve run into in a long time!
Wommusic plans to record Melissa Aldana & Crash Trio this summer and to release the album in 2014.
