When Chilean saxophonist/composer and 2013 Thelonious Monk Intl. Jazz Competition winner Melissa Aldana first picked up the saxophone at age 6, her father Marcos Aldana – himself a great saxophonist and a former semi-finalist the the Monk Competition – first taught her to transcripe Charlie Parker solos, not by jotting down notes on music paper but by listening to them and copy them phrase by phrase by ear.
It is therefore a special honor and pleasure for Melissa to be able to present her band – Melissa Aldana & Crash Trio also feat. Pablo Menares on bass and Francisco Mela on drums – and music at the Charlie Parker Jazz Festival tomorrow Saturday Aug. 23. Saturday’s event will be held at Marcus Garvey Park in uptown Manhattan/Harlem. Melissa’s performance is from 4pm-4:50pm and Kris Bowers, Lionel Loueke and Wallace Roney are also scheduled to perform with their bands.
Melissa just did an interview for the blog FDRMX where she talks about Charlie Parker and the festival. You can read it by clicking here.
